Publishing How Far You Travel, and What Changes Past It

A service area is the first thing a customer resolves about a flooring business and the last thing most flooring sites state plainly, even though it governs whether you are found at all when someone searches from a particular town. A list of three counties is not an answer, because the question underneath it was never where you go. It is what changes when the job sits at the far edge of where you go.

Why a county list answers nothing

A county is large. Somebody forty minutes past your usual run is inside the county you named and outside the work you actually want, and they cannot tell which from the page. So they ring, you quote a figure with travel folded into it, and the quote reads as expensive for reasons they cannot see.

The list did not lose you the enquiry. It lost you the ability to explain the quote, because by the time you are explaining, the number is already in front of them.

What actually changes with distance

Three things, and only one is fuel.

The first is the return visit. A job an hour out turns one drive into three the moment a transition strip is wrong or a board is damaged in transit, and that is the cost nobody prices at quote stage. The second is the survey. Measuring a room fifty miles away costs a morning whether or not the job is won. The third is your crew’s day, because a fitter who leaves at six to be on site for eight is a fitter you are paying for travel.

None of that is unreasonable and all of it is invisible. A customer who has not been told assumes a floor costs the same to lay wherever it is laid.

The two honest structures

A hard boundary states where you stop. Past this line you do not come, and here is who does. It is the cleanest version and it is the one most owners resist, because it looks like turning away work.

A tiered boundary states a core area at your standard rate and an outer band with a stated surcharge, survey charge, or minimum job size. It is more work to write and it is closer to how most flooring businesses actually operate.

Pick one and say which it is. The failure is the third option, which is publishing a wide area and applying a hard boundary in practice.

What to publish

The core area, named in towns rather than counties, because a customer knows whether they live in a town. What the outer band costs, as a figure, a percentage or a minimum job size. Whether the survey is charged past a stated distance and whether it comes off the job. What you do beyond the outer band, which is usually a referral and is worth saying out loud.

An assistant asked whether a flooring company covers a particular town can only repeat what a source states plainly. A page naming towns is answerable. A page naming a county is not, and the assistant will reach for a competitor who was specific.

The radius is a commitment, so publish one you keep

A boundary you break is worse than one you never drew. If you take the occasional job well outside the area because it is the right job, that is a commercial decision and it does not belong on the page as an exception, because an exception published is a boundary withdrawn.

Review the area when the crew changes size, when fuel moves, and when you open or close a second address. A radius that was right two years ago and quietly wrong since is the same failure as a price list nobody updated.

The boundary of what we do here

SIMLL does not set service areas, travel charges, survey fees or minimum job sizes, does not quote work, and makes no representation about what any flooring business charges or where it will go. We sell none of it, and nothing on this page is legal or financial advice. How far your vans go and what you charge past that are operational and commercial decisions taken with your own advisers. Our part begins once the boundary exists, and is confined to whether it is written where a customer reads it before they call.

That combination, topical authority strategy paired with rigorous on-page execution, is what our team brings to every business we work with.

Distance is one of the costs that arrives after the headline figure, which is the same problem a square foot price that reads as a shelf price creates and what installation included does not include sets out. It also sits next to the other line you have drawn and not published, which is the smallest floor you will lay. All of it feeds how a flooring business actually gets found.

A service area is a promise about distance in every trade that drives to the work. Restoration makes the same promise against a clock instead of a map, in your response radius and what happens at its edge.

Frequently asked questions

Should we publish our service area?

Yes, and in towns rather than counties. A customer knows whether they live in a named town. A county is large enough that somebody well outside your usual run still reads themselves as inside it.

What should we say changes past our core area?

Whatever actually changes: a travel surcharge, a charged survey, a higher minimum job size, or a longer lead time. State it as a figure or a percentage rather than as a note that costs may vary.

Will publishing a boundary lose us work?

It loses enquiries you would have quoted and lost anyway, at the point where they cost you nothing. What it protects is the quote you do send, because the customer already understands why distance is in it.

What do we do about jobs outside the area?

Say who else to call. A referral costs you an enquiry you were not going to take and returns a reputation for being straight, which is the thing a review measures.

How often should the service area be reviewed?

When the crew changes size, when fuel moves, and when you open or close an address. A radius that was right two years ago and quietly wrong since is the same defect as an out of date price.
